The High Holiday Prayerbook [machzor] is, among other things, an extraordinary collection of dreams, yearnings, and, occasionally, tears of dozens of generations of Jewish writers. The piyyutim—the remarkable prayer-poems that give the Machzor its unique character—are the subject of our Spiritual Preparation classes this year, including both familiar and unexpected passages. We’ll explore a selection of piyyutim: their origin and structures, their allusions to Torah and Midrash, and most importantly, their meanings for our own lives this year.
